Chapel Hill - #9 North Carolina's takedown on NC State this afternoon shined due to the performances of Stanford transfer Harrison Ingram and freshman Elliot Cadeau en route to UNC's 79-70 win. Ingram's and Cadeau's individual outcomes were the backbone of a Carolina comeback, as Coach Davis' team was down going into halftime, 45-37. UNC and NC State were going back and forth for the majority of the first half, as there were a total of 13 lead changes after 40 minutes of basketball. Harrison Ingram got it going quickly as he sank two free throws and a three-pointer for an instant five points. Ingram's outing wrote 22 points a new season-high and six rebounds on eight of 14 FGs and two of five from beyond the arc on the scoresheet. At the line, number 55 converted all four of his free throw attempts. "I feel like Harrison does that every game; his energy changes the whole game for us, and it just picks us up. And he's had a lot of games where he played that well, and I felt like that was his best half," Cadeau said when asked about Ingram's play during the post-game interviews. The junior out of Dallas, Texas, had another high-level showing despite only having 27 points across the team's last three clashes. As of now, Ingram averages 12 points, nine rebounds, and two assists on the season, as the regular season is just about to wrap up before the start of March Madness. Elliot Cadeau's season has seen exponential growth over the course of the 2023–2024 campaign, and it is still continuing after executing the way he did today. The freshman out of West Orange, New Jersey, scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds, and found his teammates seven different times as the contest unfolded. "He's extremely fast and quick, so he's able to blow by. One thing I think that is underrated about his game is his ability to finish through contact and especially amongst the bigs. He does a great job of just getting into the body and just finishing," senior RJ Davis commented while being asked about Cadeau's ability to get to the basket.
Before the game clock sounded off, officially handing the Tar Heels another tally in the win column, the defense during the first half was their biggest problem. NC State was able to convert many threes on their end of the floor, resulting in a yelling Coach Davis, as said by Ingram after the game. "I couldn't really tell you what he was saying; I know he was yelling a lot. That's all we needed to hear—is yelling, roasting everybody, but you know that's what we needed to hear," the junior said about his head coach during the locker room break.
NC State's Jayden Taylor finished the game with 22 points, including five made threes. His teammate, DJ Horne, helped out with 20 points with two three-pointers. The two formed the foundation of the Wolfpack's offense during the first 20 minutes but could not continue the same success throughout the second half. The beginning of the final 20 minutes featured a long field goal drought for Coach Keatts, as his team was unable to make another jump shot until the 8:52 time stamp. Jayden Taylor's three-ball, assisted by Casey Morsell, wiped away that stretch, as prior to the made basket, Morsell's jumper at 19:32 was the last bucket. North Carolina did not get another 42-point performance from RJ Davis or a 20 and 10 point game from Armando Bacot, but it just proves the depth this roster consists of. Regardless of who is having an off-night shooting the ball, there will be guys to pick up the slack. UNC completes the regular season sweep against NC State, as this makes win number five for Coach Davis against the Wolfpack. This coming Tuesday, March 5th, the final home game for North Carolina on their calendar takes place against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-17, 6-11 conference), who stand at the bottom portion of the ACC standings. Cormac Ryan will have the chance to face his former team for the first time since transferring. For Armando Bacot, this will conclude his career at the Dean Dome as he will have one last sign-off after five seasons at Chapel Hill, a moment that will have Carolina faithful reminiscing about the past.
