Chapel Hill - #20 North Carolina swept their 3-game homestand to begin the brand new season as they defeated the UC Riverside Highlanders, 77-52, on Friday night at the Smith Center.
The Sophomore Pair Makes an Impact
Seth Trimble and Jalen Washington are the only two players to remain from Coach Davis's first-ever recruiting class as head coach.
Last night, they contributed a total of 22 points and 7 rebounds, shooting 9-12 from the field and 3-3 from beyond together. An outstanding performance coming off the bench, a representation of the individual improvements made over the summer, along with the depth this roster consists of.
From stretching the defense out to the three-point line as Washington displays his shooting touch to Trimble's posterizing dunk on the fast-break, assisting RJ Davis, and starting with Jae'Lyn Withers's insane swat. The future looks bright for the guys out of Gary, Indiana, and Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
As the season continues to progress, Coach Davis and staff hope to see more high-output games from their second-year players.
Off-Shooting Night for the Heels
Even though the Tar Heels came out victorious, they shot under 30% from downtown. The additions of Cormac Ryan, Paxson Wojcik, and Jae'Lyn Withers are anticipated to make big contributions in this category underneath the leadership of the NBA's second-all-time leader in three-point percentage, Hubert Davis.
As the competition continues to increase and the defense becomes heavier, the shots must be falling to keep Armando Bacot inside the paint from getting double-teamed by opponents. This allows Bacot to accelerate and dominate around the rim.
Last season, UNC only shot 31% as a team from three, and they look to change that number with a revamped roster that addresses this kind of issue.
The Heels Travel To The Bahamas
UNC will take a trip to The Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament, taking on Northern Iowa in their first contest.
The game is set for Wednesday, November 22nd, at 12:00 p.m. on ESPN.
North Carolina is marked at 81.8% for the matchup predictor, according to ESPN Analytics.
